Overview

The world of animation and visual effects is changing: real-time engines, virtual production, artificial intelligence and increasingly collaborative pipelines are reshaping the way moving images are created for film, series, advertising and video games.

That is why productions are looking for professionals who combine solid technical skills with visual sensitivity, who can move confidently across the entire 3D pipeline and quickly learn new tools.

The Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Design & Visual Arts at H-FARM College, powered by Big Rock, trains 3D generalist artists with animation and visual effects at its core. An animation degree that starts from hand drawing, photography and physical materials, moves through professional digital production and arrives at the conscious use of artificial intelligence.

Why a degree in Animation, Design & Visual Arts

This animation degree follows a clear path: imagination, writing, hand drawing, three-dimensional production, artificial intelligence and, finally, a return to the physical dimension. Artificial intelligence comes last, when you already have the creativity and craft to guide it, rather than be guided by it.

The first year takes place without software during class hours: drawing, analog photography, clay sculpture and graphic design teach you to observe, think and build images with your hands. From the second year you enter the professional 3D pipeline, studying the logic behind industry tools rather than a single piece of software, so you are ready to take on any future technology. In the third year you work with AI, documenting every creative choice, and bring the digital back into physical space through 3D scanning and virtual production.

You will study on a unique campus, in contact with an international community of creatives, technologists and entrepreneurs, with experiences such as the materials lab in Murano. With the Startup Track you can also develop your own entrepreneurial project with the campus Entrepreneurship & Startup Center: H-FARM ranked first in Italy in the Financial Times “Europe’s Leading Start-up Hubs” 2024 ranking and is a member of the Global Accelerator Network.

Academics

The Animation, Design & Visual Arts degree program

During this animation degree you will build skills ranging from visual culture to advanced digital production. The first year, shared with the Game Design & Digital Arts and Product Design & Intelligent Technologies programs, gives you solid foundations in image theory, drawing, photography, sculpture and graphic design, along with the habit of reflective writing through the Diary, a working journal that will accompany you throughout all three years.

The second year is dedicated to 3D production: six courses that work together as a single pipeline, from modeling and digital sculpting to texturing and look development, through to lighting, rigging, animation, FX, compositing and motion graphics.

The third year projects you into the future of production with AI Pipeline for Moving Images and Digital to Physical, dedicated to scanning and virtual production, concluding with an extended production project and the Experiential Term, in close contact with the professional world.

An academic thesis and individual research project, accompanied by an intensive week of classes on research methods and writing techniques.

H-FARM College Faculty

The program is coordinated by Luciano Comacchio and builds on the experience of Big Rock, one of Italy’s leading institutions in computer graphics education. The faculty is made up of artists, supervisors and professionals who work every day in animation, visual effects and virtual production, alongside instructors with international academic experience.

To give animation students an experience close to the real dynamics of the industry, classes alternate with authentic briefs, collaborative production projects, reviews, workshops and meetings with guest speakers from international studios and productions. By the end of the program you will have a strong portfolio, a documented creative process and the teamwork experience typical of major productions.
