Overview

Product design is undergoing a profound transformation: physical objects, digital interfaces, artificial intelligence, advanced fabrication and robotics are increasingly converging, giving rise to intelligent products that are changing the way we live, work and care for people.

That is why companies, startups and innovation centers are looking for designers who understand people’s needs, know materials and form, can prototype both digitally and physically, and make responsible decisions in complex social, technical and commercial contexts.

The Bachelor’s degree in Product Design & Intelligent Technologies at H-FARM College trains product designers capable of designing physical and digital products that integrate the most advanced technologies, with a distinctive focus on design for health and wellbeing. A product design degree that starts from hand drawing and physical materials, moves through digital and human-centered design and arrives at the conscious use of artificial intelligence, 3D printing and robotics.

Why a degree in Product Design & Intelligent Technologies

This product design degree follows a clear path: imagination, writing, hand drawing, three-dimensional production, artificial intelligence and, finally, a return to the physical dimension. Artificial intelligence comes last, when you already have the creativity and craft to guide it, rather than be guided by it.

The first year takes place without software during class hours: drawing, analog photography, clay sculpture and graphic design teach you to observe, think and give shape to ideas with your hands. From the second year you enter the product designer’s craft: user research, sketching and CAD, interfaces, wearables, real-time prototyping, ergonomics and materials, studying the logic behind industry tools rather than a single piece of software. All of this is applied to a high-impact vertical field: eyewear, orthoses and prostheses, surgical instruments, and assistive and rehabilitation devices. In the third year you work with AI, documenting every design choice, and complete the product chain with 3D printing and robotics.

Throughout the program you keep a Diary, a working journal that records research, experiments, feedback and design decisions. In the third year you will develop the Major Project on an external brief, working in a team with students from the Animation, Design & Visual Arts and Game Design & Digital Arts programs, just as happens in corporate innovation teams.

You will study on a campus just outside Venice where students, professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators work side by side, with study spaces, a library, events, sports facilities and Student Life, wellness, counseling and housing support services. With the Startup Track you can also develop your own entrepreneurial project with the campus Entrepreneurship & Startup Center: H-FARM ranked first in Italy in the Financial Times “Europe’s Leading Start-up Hubs” 2024 ranking and is a member of the Global Accelerator Network.

Academics

The Product Design & Intelligent Technologies degree program

During this product design degree you will build skills ranging from visual culture to creating working prototypes. The first year, shared with the Animation, Design & Visual Arts and Game Design & Digital Arts programs, gives you solid foundations in image theory, drawing, photography, sculpture and graphic design, along with the habit of reflective writing through the Diary.

The second year is dedicated to the designer’s craft: six courses that work as a single sequence, from user research and design methods to product sketching and CAD, from UI and design systems to human-machine interaction, wearables and sensory interfaces, through to real-time prototyping, ergonomics, materials and technical drawing. You will design with constant attention to inclusive and accessible design, created for diverse users and care settings.

The third year projects you into the future of design with AI Pipeline for Product & Interfaces and Digital to Physical, dedicated to 3D printing and robotics, concluding with the Integrated Product Project, developed in a team on an external client brief, and the Experiential Term, in close contact with the professional world.

How the Experiential Term works

During the second semester of the third year, students have the opportunity to put the skills acquired during their studies into practice by choosing one of the following three options:

Internship project

A ten-week internship at a company or startup in Italy or abroad, accompanied by an intensive week of classes on research methods and on preparing the business project report and final pitch.

Pre-accelerator

Guided by experts from the H-FARM Entrepreneurship & Startup Center, students can develop their own startup project, which will be the subject of a business project report and final pitch.

Dissertation

An academic thesis and individual research project, accompanied by an intensive week of classes on research methods and writing techniques.

H-FARM College Faculty

The program is coordinated by Luciano Comacchio. The faculty is made up of product and industrial designers, UX and interaction designers, experts in digital fabrication and robotics, and professionals in design for health, alongside instructors with international academic experience.

To give product design students an experience close to the real dynamics of the profession, classes alternate with authentic briefs, field research with users, lab prototyping, multidisciplinary team projects, workshops and meetings with guest speakers from innovative companies and startups. By the end of the program you will have a strong portfolio of projects and prototypes, a documented design process and experience working on real briefs.
